Trejo's Snack Shop, Belize City

Outstanding food at very reasonable prices....managed by Steve Swasey's sister Carla...

My mom and stepdad have owned that little place at the corner of West and Bishop Streets since the mid-70's. It was so much different then, when George Street was just another street, not the home of one of the major gangs in Belize City.

The gang-bangers pretty much leave the old folks alone, even though both my sisters Carla and Sheila have been robbed in the vicinity.

There is a story about that sign that reads "Please No Obscene Language". My mom is a Jehovah's witness and doesn't like it when people cuss... thus the sign. Mr. Trejo is a play-play Jehovah's witness and couldn't give a rats ass who cusses. Putting that sign up in a shop frequented by gang-bangers is like telling kids not to piss in the pool. Anyway, about four years ago when I was visiting them in Belize, a couple of guys were arguing over who was in line first and there were more than a few obscene words exchanged. Dad was in the shop while my mom, who usually works upstairs cooking the pastries was coming into the doorway with some fresh-baked goodies.

Well, as the guys were cussing, my dad told them "Bwai, uno no si di fuckin' sign whe seh no bad wud"? My mom hollered "Alejandro" and almost fainted.

Lovely old couple, those two. I love them dearly.
