Fort George Hotel
February 1954: "Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will give an assurance that no racial discrimination is practised at the Fort George Hotel, Belize, British Honduras, which has been built by the Colonial Development Corporation."
"I am assured by the; Colonial Development Corporation, who manage this noted, that no racial discrimination is practised there. Indeed, I am informed that such discrimination is unknown in British Honduras."
In the 1930's, the whole area up to Memorial Park, was reclaimed with Suction Dredges.
BUT when they began to drive piles for the Foundation of the Hotel, they found areas where they had to drive piles on top of piles. - The sub-surface was very soft before they reached the PLATE BELOW.
I got some of the pictures from my Mother in Law, who was an avid collector of Old Photographs, especially from her Dad an English Man, by name Charles Chichley Price.
( many years ago, I loan my collection to The Belize Archives, to Mr Rudy Castillo of Government Information Department and to my friend Mr King, Chief of the Government Agriculture Department.
This area was like an Island near the " MILITARY FORT GEORGE, a Military Outpost. - Baron Bliss Toomb was built long after..
The piano player was Richard Ysaquirre - there was nothing that he could not play - even if he only heard it once. Richard was such a sweet boy and yes he could tickle those ivories. He played by ear. He and his family lived opposite the Ushers on Pickstock Street, next to the Waights. Sometimes he would sing along with his piano playing. Richard also played at the Bellevue Hotel, and at restaurants and bars out at Caye Caulker and San Pedro, and I think that is where he died.
I became good friends with Richard during the time I was bartender/front desk clerk at Bellevue in the late 70's. I made him a lasagne dinner for his birthday on July 4th. I ran into him again in 1980 in San Pedro where he worked. I asked him to give me piano lessons and he said he would love to but then he showed me that half the keys were not working. I would never have known because he played that piano like if all keys worked. Luz Hunter
