Belize Coat of Arms, from Honduras Almanack, 1829
Here is the Honduras Almanack of 1829. The pages of this Almanack comprise a snapshot of life in Belize just a couple decades after the Battle of Saint George’s Caye. On page 104 we are introduced to Belize’s own militia under the heading - Distribution of the Officers of the Militia, to their Respective Companies. We are told the military position held by these freemen of Belize and also their race - described as white, mulatto, coloured and black. Many of the officers of the militia (black, white, mulatto and coloured) appear on page 96 where they are recorded as Members of The Legislative Meeting of the Colony. On page 161 we have the trading boats and who owned them and on page 145 we have the commercial sector with names of business owners in Belize. The information indicates that these Officers of the militia were involved in all aspects of Belize life from military service to politics and commerce etc.. They are so organised!
The entire Almanack is available online here.
