Christmas Inspiration at The Belize Zoo trip
We ended up with 20 children, who were clients from The Inspiration Center, along with their siblings and carers. We also hosted staff from The Inspiration Center, who do such brilliant work with these children. The Belize Zoo and their incredible team provided free tours, cupcakes and juice for everyone. The tours were so much fun and I can’t tell you how touching it was to watch the children interact with the animals. It wouldn’t be possible to thank Jamal Andrewin Bohn, The Belize Zoo’s Director of Education, enough for getting on board with all of this and helping to make it happen.
Cheers Restaurant & Cabanas provided the lunch at a knockdown price so that we could provide each child with a really delicious burger and fries. The Chocolate Company prepared a yummy goody Christmas bag for every child. After lunch, the children were allowed to choose any t-shirt they wanted from the Zoo’s shop and were also given the wonderful gift of a book, written by Sharon Matola, founder of the Belize Zoo.
We were incredibly touched that Premiere Charters and Tours came through with the donation of a fully air conditioned bus and a lovely driver for the day. This was unexpected as we’d budgeted for that. We’d also budgeted for gas for The Inspiration Center van, but that wasn’t needed either.
So, with all the generous donations we received, we ended up with some surplus cash (over $800BZD), which will be split between The Belize Zoo and The Inspiration Center.
At the end of the day, one of the mothers of the children came to me in tears and told me that when she was a child, she never received presents for Christmas and that affording to give them to her own child was such a struggle. She thanked me with a huge hug and told me how much this day had meant to her and her little boy. That’s what makes this all worthwhile.
We were able to make my crazy Christmas dream a reality and for creating memories for some very special children that will never be forgotten.
If you’d like to see more photos and read about the day, San Pedro Scoop came along for the ride and did a brilliant article on the day out. I also posted photos on Facebook. Here's an article in the San Pedro Sun.
