A roadside sign at Bird’s Isle, Only Nasty People Litter
Brian Keating:
Back in my day Birds Isle was just a small Eastern-most raised islet being one of several that ran West to an outfall from Collette Canal, from there the land was contiguous with the shoreline. This little string of sort of raised sandbars with mangrove on them created what was known then as Yarborough Lagoon, Birds Isle was known as Blackbird Island and was home to a large nesting colony of them. The little islands for the most part were solid enough to walk on with some soft & mushy spots and were mostly sand with mangrove and other low vegetation. Yarborough Lagoon itself was shallow and had oyster reefs; a couple hundred yards on the outside there was a grass bank that ran all the way around to the front by where the racks for the turtle nets used to hang and harbored some nice snappers.
