The cemetery at St. George's Caye
The cemetery at St. George's Caye is the smallest archaeological reserve in the country. Were it not for a one modern era burial crypt and a few modern memorial markers, one would hardy know the St. George’s Caye cemetery was a burial ground much less the oldest non-Maya historic cemetery in Belize.
The site was well maintained until the 1920's but hurricanes, time and vandalism erased all other signs that a cemetery exists. The earliest carved stone on record is 1787, but there were undoubtedly unmarked graves that predate this.
