Here is what the Fort George area looked like soon after the reclamation and the joining of Fort George Island and the mainland of North Side.

Reclamation of the Fort George area by dredging. Hector Silva: This was followed with the reclamation of what is known as Kings Park in 1965. Followed by Queen's Square in 1966, then we reclaimed the Belamas on the Haulover Road, in 1978, Lake Independence area in 1982, and the Port area in 1983. Thereafter reclamation came to a halt.

Belize City Land Reclamation map, and Fort George area after the reclamation and joining of Fort George Island and the mainland

We all know that Belize City is at or below sea level, but do we know that Belize City was originally smaller than it is currently. The land mass that we know that makes up Belize City wasn't always as large.

Most of us are familiar with the reclamation project carried out on the Marine Parade Boulevard area in the early 2000's; however, there were two other reclamation projects carried out many years before the 2000 project that the younger folks might not know about.

The two other reclamations had to do with the joining of the Fort George Island with the rest of North Side, which was carried out by the Jefferson Construction Company of New Orleans, USA, in 1924. The other major reclamation was the one carried out on the South Side of Belize City in the area we now know as the Foreshore.
