The founding of Georgeville, 1960
ANOTHER UNTOLD SAD STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING that proved the worth of BEING A UNITED PEOPLE. THIS WAS THAT MEMORABLE OCCASION, WHEN THE VILLAGE OF GEORGE VILLE WAS BAPTIZED, BY THE FATHER OF THE NATION, The Honorable George Cadle Price, and the Honorable Representative, Hector David Silva. The Chairman of the Village was Mr. Mathew Spain.
As we moved forward to Self Government in 1960, the big landowners began to pressure hundreds of their land tenants who they considered PUP supporters.
SUDDENLY in early 1960, THREE MONTHS Notices of eviction began to be issued to hundreds of villagers all over the country.
IN THIS CASE, Let's deal with this photograph below. There were these many families that had been remove from Baking Pot Village and settled at a place called, Baccadier in the NEW HAVEN ESTATE, which later the Colonial regime allowed these to be sold to Mr. Mckinstry.
When these people received the THREE MONTHS notice to evacuate, they came to my office at the El Cayo Town Board.
I immediately contacted Hon George Price. ( who by the way had been expelled from the British Governor's Executive Council, )
He told me to gather the people for a public meeting. - So I contacted the village Elders, Mathew Spain, Sonny Jones, Santiago Waight, Daniel Alford, Carlos Phillips, Tibuly Jones
Mrs Venus Gentle, Miss Reid and many others.
Mr Price came and told them DO NOT MOVE, we will acquire these lands as soon as we win the elections in early 1961.
In 1961 we won all 18 Constituencies. We acquired the lands and the people decided to call their village "GEORGE VILLE"
as a thank you to the Honorable GEORGE PRICE.
