Botanically actually a berry, Avocado (Persea americana) is originally native to southern Mexico and probably too Belize and northern Guatemala.
The word "avocado" comes from the Spanish "aguacate" which in turn comes from the Nahuatl word "ahuacatl"; unsurprisingly the Nahuatl word was also used to mean "testicle"!
The avocado is unusual in that it demonstrates dichogamy, a form of sequential hermaphroditism where the plant appears to change sex at various points in the day with flowers opening as female the first day then opening as male on the second day.
