Premier George Price, Hon. Santiago Perdomo, and Hector Silva in Arenal Village, early 1960's
Arenal is the most Westerly Community in Belize and sits on the border with Guatemala. The Border runs in the middle of the football field.
It was in this village, that Mr. Price wanted to see the economic conditions of the people, by asking permission to see what they were cooking for their mid-day meal.
(San Perdomo and myself were still in our mid 20's and the Boss in his late 30's - quite long ago.)
NO SUV, NO NECKTIE, NO EXPENSIVE SHOES. NO POLICE BATALLION, OR G.S.U. WITH RIFLES & BATONS.
Everything was different then. Population was smaller, roads were rougher, everybody seemed to be living the same standard of life.
AN UNFORGETABLE VISIT TO THE VILLAGE OF "ARENAL" IN THE COMPANY OF THE HONORABLE GEORGE PRICE.
ARENAL is a picturesque Village.
It is the most WESTERLY Village of Belize, only some 6 miles from Benque Viejo del Carmen. It has a Village Council, a Police Station and a large school.
Arenal sits ON TOP OF THE BELIZE / GUATEMALA BORDER.
The Center of its Football field is, SMACK on top of the Border Line.
Many years ago, the Church was in the Center of the Border. To receive Communion you had to cross the Border.
This picture shows, an interesting episode in the Peaceful and Constructive Belizean Revolution.
After Hurricane Hattie devastated our natural Resources, there was great hardship and unemployment countrywide. - - - So the Honorable George Price made a Fact finding tour to listen to the people and see in what way, the Government could be of urgent and IMMEDIATE HELP.
NOW HIS METHOD WAS, to visit homes and cordially ask permission to visit the Kitchen. - In a friendly manner he would open the pot and see what was cooking.
We kind a felt shaky for a while, until he told us. " The Economy of a country is in the KITCHEN. "
He then told the Area Representative, the Honorable Santiago Perdomo to come to his office to arrange assistance for Arenal.
AND SO WAS THE GOVERNMENT ABLE TO KNOW THE SUFFERINGS and NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE. - I will never forget this George Price Theory.
