“Press is Guardian of Free Speech”
The Belize Billboard became a target for the Colonial Officials. Mr. Goldson revealed that there was an economic “squeeze” campaign against the Billboard by Colonial Secretary E.D Hone in an attempt suppress them. The article states:
“Attempts of Colonial Secretary E.D Hone to suppress the Billboard were revealed at Friday nights PUP meeting by Goldson. He revealed:
1. $1500 years loss in revenue for the Billboard.
2. Refusal from social development officer to give interviews or share plans for social development in the colony.
3. Official news and advertisements withheld from the Billboard.
He concluded “we the editors regard ourselves as guardians of the People’s rights to free speech. We consider it our duty to defend that right to the bitter end”.
