“Press is Guardian of Free Speech”
The Belize Billboard became a target for the Colonial Officials. Mr. Goldson revealed that there was an economic “squeeze” campaign against the Billboard by Colonial Secretary E.D Hone in an attempt suppress them. The article states:
“Attempts of Colonial Secretary E.D Hone to suppress the Billboard were revealed at Friday nights PUP meeting by Goldson. He revealed:
1. $1500 years loss in revenue for the Billboard.
2. Refusal from social development officer to give interviews or share plans for social development in the colony.
3. Official news and advertisements withheld from the Billboard.
He concluded “we the editors regard ourselves as guardians of the People’s rights to free speech. We consider it our duty to defend that right to the bitter end”.
I remember the Hon Phillp Goldson as a young girl best friend to my late dad, I remember him on his motor cycle when he come to visit. I do miss the name British Honduras, it confusing when you send a letter to family or friends in Belize City and it say Belize city, Belize it look ridiculous I hate that they change to Belize who is the dumb ass that change the name? When I mailed a package or letter to Belize City , Belize , I get this funny look from the people working at the Post Office and they would ask if the address is correct and I have to explain. Many years ago since the name people get confuse when they ask you where you live you say Belize they surprise and would say never heard of BELIZE then would you explain the name was British Honduras then they say been there many year, it now well known as Belize, but I like British Honduras that's only me I was born when it was Brtish Honduras maybe all who was born when it was British Honduras , should say British Honduras and who born when the change should say place of birth Belize.(lol)
