Stucco painting on the west wall of Mound 1 at the Maya ruins of Santa Rita outside of Corozal
(S. Hagar 1917, Plate 3). It is thought that this was the Maya city of Chetumal.
Chaktemal (Santa Rita) was the home of the Great Maya Chief Nachan Can.
“Turkeys in the shape of spears and corn in the shape of arrows" was Nachan Can's reply in answer to a demand to submit to Spain.
