The Majestic Great Horned Owl

Finally, had the privilege to photograph this Beautiful hunter for the first time south of San Pedro Town.

(An owlet is never late, nor is it early... it arrives precisely when it means to!)

Here are two very cute Great Horned Owlets snuggled in their nest together! Although Owlets can be difficult to identify, the mother owl could be seen in the area during this Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development bird survey of Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and helped to identify these two little balls of downy fluff!

We take this as another opportunity to remind everyone that it is so crucial that bird nests are not disturbed or approached by members of the public, or by tour guides offering tours. Our team on surveys only get this close to chicks very rarely using long-distance lenses to monitor species progress - on any other day they would stay back just as we ask you all to do!
