First session of the Benque Viejo del Carmen Town Council, 1958

Denton Coleman is on the left fourth step coming down, wearing black pants. Coming out to the right of Denton Coleman is Cayo Municipal Counselor Don Antonio T Espat, grandfather of Millin Espat.

This was the day, on the 29th December, 1958, when the Benque Viejo Town Board was won by the People's United Party. That year the PUP won all the Municipal Elections of Belize, including then the town of Monkey River.

I remember with sadness, that this town was abandoned by the Colonial Authorities. Benque Viejo del Carmen had no electricity, no piped water, no telephone, only one mule and cart to pick up the town garbage. The mule and cart that picked up the garbage was known as “EL BILL.”

Furthermore, to reach this town, you had to pass through a cloud of white dust on a very narrow road built with white lime. A high school was but a dream only.

But the PUP came forward and supplied all these services and more.

This picture was taken on the Old Town Hall, on the swearing of the elected members by District Commissioner, Mr Ramon Ramirez. Members were Mr. Antonio Kuylen, First Mayor of Benque Viejo, with his elected members, Jesus Moh, Felipe Moralez and Edwardo Guerra, and nominated members, Mr. Denton Coleman, Doctor Gollasys, and official member, Mr. Ramon Ramirez.

Observers were: Hector Silva, newly elected Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, and Deputy Mayor, Santiago Perdomo )

My Nostalgia is, that all these good gentlemen have PASSED AWAY leaving me alone to tell this story.
