Pen Cayetano, Belizean Artist Extraordinaire
Pen was born in 1954 in Dangriga, Stann Creek District Belize and is a self-taught artist who became involved in the art and music world at a very young age. Throughout the years Pen has had his work displayed in multiple exhibitions, and collections both local and international. He has also had the opportunity to talk about his art and music at lectures, participated in residencies and is the recipient of numerous awards and grants.
He started drawing in elementary school and began playing the guitar around the same time. Over the years his art style developed and his favorite medium of choice to work with became oil on canvas focusing on depicting scenes in the stylistic choices of modern art and contemporary realism. These paintings are colorful recreations of Belizean life and Garinagu culture.
In 1981 Cayetano created Punta Rock which is a combination of cultural Garifuna music with elements of rock music. This music was able to bring together older people who appreciated Garifuna rhythm as well as the younger generation who were able to enjoy the rock beat and quickly gained popularity.
Pen along with his wife Ingrid, have a gallery, Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery, that was opened in 2009 in which both their art as well as other local artists are showcased. As Pen Cayetano goes throughout life he will continue to share the passion and knowledge of his craft and culture with the Belizean population and the world.
