BATSUB Army training centre on St. George's Caye, 1960's

Debbie Gegg: This was their R and R base after jungle training. Blokes came out there to learn how to sail, fish, relax and unwind! Had avery small commissary and would sell delicious chocolates and ice to the islanders when it opened in the evenings. Most popular purchases, chocolates, ice and beer! And an army doctor available if anyone got stung or bitten or fell I'll! Good old caye days!

Mike Heusner: After several weeks in the Belize bush, dakta fly, pisen wood, etc, they were shipped to the camp at St. Georges Caye to heal in the salt water.

Karl M Leacock Sr.: Right next to Dr. Leroy Heusner's property. The limeys taught me to use the kayak. Righting a kayak with you strapped in was the hardest. Bought duty free liquor and cigs from them. This was during the build up of forces in Belize.

Tom Greenwood Sr.: BATSUB. British Army Training Sub Unit Belize. Used a lot to acclimatise Brit military coming to Belize and also for R & and recreation. Marine activities.

Denise Turnell: We used to get chocolate from these guys on the way to visiting the Coddís who had a home next door. Fond memories...

JA Spoonaz: My Dad sold that property to the Coddís in the 70ís (still Pissed about that lol) , my Dad bought it from the Dragtons just before Hattie!!! The first Army House was built in the early 60's, I was still in SCE. Our House was next to the lot that the Army House was built on, land owned by Mrs Bradley, Mrs Betty Eyles Mother. Trevor Roe came out to spend vacation with us and we would go over to watch and interfere. We would get jelly beans and chocolates in brass colored tins, great treats, also to see sexy naked posters of young girls from Playboy. My Mothers guest was Jennifer Bradley ( Daughter of Mr Bradley who had a Butcher Shop and they lived on Regent Street by The Governors House and once where Bze Chamber of Commerce was housed), a beautiful young woman who caught the eye of the British Captain supervising the construction. He would come over every night to coatin Jennifer bringing gifts which us boys benifitted from. However the naked posters were removed eventually, I guess they thought we were too young to see such things. The House shown here is not the one I remember, it was ground level and built like a barracks. When we were out there Dr Heusners house was not there, Hattie must have gawn with it.If you are in front of the Caye, looking West, the Army House was to the left of us, Heusners empty lot to our right, then an empty lot which is McNabs now, and them Charles and Betty Eyles House. (Charlie or Stephen Heusner property now belonging to June Heusner. Remember their father Leroy the dentist got that long after Hattie.)

Eugene Trench: Remembered the British Forces at the Caye during an Easter vacation whilst we were at the caye one of my buddy took two quart Caribbean to the British area and came back with two cases Miller Genuine Draft Beer great trade.
