Many people whose priorities are fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit ... and the angler's dream of a Grand Slam, diving on our world famous barrier reef, exploring Mayan sites, cave tubing and zip lining and other eco-adventures, or simply relaxing come to holiday with us at El Pescador.

A recipient of numerous awards and accolades, El Pescador, continues to be known as a world-class fly-fishing resort. Over the years, it has become a top choice for anglers, eco-adventurers, couples, and families looking for a tropical vacation and to get the best out of their visit to Belize.

The popular getaway started as an undeveloped beachfront in the early 1970s. The property then belonged to a Juergen and Kathleen Krueger. According to records, the lodge officially opened its doors on September 4, 1974, with a newly finished main lodge. Today, the area represents rooms #1-10.

Stephen Krueger: When my family built El Pescador they brought a barge stacked with wood from Belize City but couldn't get the lumber to the pier so they threw the wood overboard and it promply sunk to the bottom in 5-8 feet of water. We (mostly I) had to pull over 30,000 board feet of lumber from the water onto the building site one board at a time. He also had no generator so every board was cut by handsaw one at a time. Hundreds of bags of cement were mixed one or two bags at a time for the foundation. 1973-1976.

El Pescador was very difficult because we had no electricity and were three miles down the beach from anything. I think is was also the biggest structure for miles. My father brought in Mennonites to help build it. They lived in a tent during its construction. Our family lived in a 20X20 bulding for three years while it was being built. During the first couple of years, with the exception of a couple of months all we had was kerosene lamps at night. If you ever want to check out what it was like when we lived there from 1972-1976 you can check out my book "Island of the Son." I think it's a pretty accurate instruction of how things were almost 50 years ago.

Yasin J. Shoman: El Pescador was such a lovely place, and the owners, two German brothers and their wives, such gracious hosts.
