Purple Parrot Bar, located at the
infamous Ramon's Village Resort in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye has recently
been rated one of the top ten great places for a drink by well-known
musician Jimmy Buffett. The Travel section of the June
2nd, 2000 issue of
USA TODAY states:
Jimmy Buffett has
provided the soundtrack to many a beach vacation. When he's wasting away
in Margaritaville, "I like bars that are not pretentious, that look like
they've been there since the 30s," says the 53 year-old
musician/writer/sailor/pilot. "There's
not likely
to be a computer-generated accounting system." While the
changes-in-latitude guy is "not telling all my hideouts," he shares some
favorite watering holes with USA TODAY's Kitty Bean Yancey. (P.S.: When
you run into Buffett at one of them, he probably won't be guzzling
margaritas. "If you'd have as many offered you as I have-" he says of the
allusion to his hit song. "If I want tequila, I'll drink it
straight.")
In describing The Purple Parrot Bar,
Buffett says, "I've been going there for 20 years." The open-air bar next
to the pool faces the Caribbean, and the decor includes wooden parrots.
The house special is a Purple Parrot (Baileys Irish cream, dark rum,
coconut cream, pineapple juice and ice). Patrons speak English, Spanish
and a local patois called Creole. "There's a great mixture of cultures
here."
The Purple Parrot Bar has been owned by Mr. Jerry
Gilbreath of Laurel, Mississippi since 1989. The success and popularity
of this establishment has been secured under the able management of
Manager Ruben Delgado and his staff of bartenders consisting of Herman
Wade, Raul Delgado, Joe Westby and bar waitress Anita Chi.
The other nine favorites Mr. Buffett mentions are
Louie's BackYard Restaurant & Lounge in Key West, Florida; MacDuff's
in Norman's Cay, Bahamas; All bars on Straniel Cay, The Bahamas; Le
SÈlect in Gustavia, St. BarthÈlemy French West Indies; The Deck in
Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands; Lulu's Sunset Grill in
Fairhope, Alabama; RopeWalk in Nantucket, Massachusetts; Jimmy Cantler's
Riverside Inn in Annapolis, Maryland; and Alabama Jack's in Key Largo,
Florida.
