Father Murray blesses the participants of the boat procession

The residents of San Pedro paid tribute to their patron saint - San Pedro (Saint Peter) last week with a series of religious and entertaining events. Saint Peter, the saint of all fishermen, was honored with the annual "Misa de Gallo" a mass held for men only. This was followed by breakfast for the general public at the Lions Den while the boat procession commenced. Over twenty-five boats made the slow journey from the main pier to the lagoon side where Father Murray of San Pedro Roman Catholic Church prayed for the fisherman and blessed the boats. The blessing asks for a quick return from sea and a plentiful catch. At 5:00 p.m. a foot procession was held on the main streets of San Pedro with children, men and women participating.

Thursday evening, organizers held a cultural program including presentations by Barbara's Dance Group, the San Pedro Garifuna Council, LIFE students and the San Narciso Dance Group from Corozal District. San Narciso shares almost the same culture as San Pedro and delighted the crowd with their unique traditional dances. On Friday, the San Pedro Dance Company along with the dancers from The Dance Factory of Wisconsin, USA put on a spectacular show. To wrap up that night's presentation, members of the San Pedro Lions Club joined the talented dancers in recreating the cultural presentation they performed with Lions Queen Luisana Nuñez in Belmopan. This special number narrated the evolution of Carnaval in San Pedro and received thunderous applause from the public. Saturday evening saw the talented dancers from Barbara's Dance Group making their presentation followed by a grand dance with One World Band. Throughout the three nights of celebration many prizes were given, mechanical rides and games entertained the youngsters and lots of food and drink were available.
