Local stars await their new look - a 1930s hairstyle

Casting auditions were held at this time last year and at long last the people of San Pedro will finally have the chance to see themselves or many of their friends and family on television. Trimark Productions made-for-television original movie, "After the Storm," will air on USA Network (Coral Cable Vision Channel 36) next Tuesday, March 20th at 8:00 p.m. Island film locations feature beautiful Mosquito Coast Lions Park as well as Belize's spectacular barrier reef.
Armand Assante gets a final "touch up" before shooting a scene

Set in the 1930s,"After the Storm" is based on a short story by Ernest Hemingway of a man, (Benjamin Bratt), who flees to the Bahamas after the US Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the subsequent suicide of his father. Although he is content with his life as a beachcomber, his life takes a sharp turn when he becomes partners with a wealthy businessman (Armand Assante). Following a magnificent storm, greed gets the best of the two as they attempt to recover sunken treasure.

Production credits for "After the Storm" list Belize Casting Director Silvana Woods of Kriol Gyal Prodokshans who, aided by her father/Casting Assistant, Mr. Charles Woods, conducted the auditions on Ambergris Caye. Approximately 30 local adults and children were selected to play Irish immigrants attending a beach party, while many others performed during the water scenes in the movie. Mixed emotions may be felt as the faces of a few local cast members are shown who chose not to return to the island "after the storm," meaning the real one-Hurricane Keith.

Filming one of the many boat scenes

The San Pedro Sun, the only media granted the privilege of being present on the island set, was pleased to witness the behind the scenes preparations as well as the filming of the scenes which included both types of stars - Hollywood and our local residents.

Cast credits for the movie include two Belize City residents, Rosalie Staines, host of "Open Paki" talk show on Krem Radio, and Emory King, well known Belizean author, orator and historian.

For those who miss the premier of this movie, it will be re-broadcast at 10:00 p.m. the same evening (March 20th) and again on Sunday, March 25th at 4:00 p.m.
