Only 10 more days until that special time of the year when colorful paints adorn the bodies of children and adults, and comparsas (street dancing) entertain. Of course we are talking about El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro to be observed on February 10th, 11th and 12th under the theme Carnaval 2002 - Y que siga la tradicion, (and let the tradition continue).

Once again, the planning of this traditional celebration, unique to the island, lies in the able hands of a very active Carnaval Committee. Backed by the San Pedro Town Council, Carnaval 2002 promises to be bigger and better than previous years. To kick-off the celebration, a magnificent street parade (Brazilian style) is being organized for Saturday, February 9th. Already 12 groups have confirmed their participation. This will be followed by a "Block Party" on Barrier Reef Drive. Businesses interested in forming part of this "fun affair" may contact Omar Arceo at the San Pedro Town Hall by calling 2198.

On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the traditional street painting and comparsas will take place. All schools, social groups and organizations are invited to join the comparsas in an effort to keep this tradition alive. On Tuesday, February 12th, first and second prizes will be awarded to the best comparsas. This specific part of the celebration will take place at Central Park where food and drinks will be on sale. Prior to the announcement of the winners, all carnaval enthusiasts are invited to join in the "Painted Persons Parade."

The committee is still working on specific details to ensure that Carnaval 2002 will be a spectacular event. The main objective of the committee and the San Pedro Town Council is to make Carnaval an affair for EVERYONE - the young and old, the locals and visitors - EVERYONE! So start practicing those dance moves and planning your costumes for El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro.
