Workers place cobblestones on Coconut Drive
|
The placing of cobblestones on Coconut
Drive from the Island Super Market traveling north to the area in front of TMM
has commenced. Mr. Guillermo Rojas of the construction firm of Rojas, Schulz
& Nelder is in charge of this project and informed the San
Pedro Sun that, in addition to the placing of cobblestones, two
speed bumps will be placed; one near the south entrance of Ramon's Village and
the other in front of Steve and Becky's Cute Little Hotel. Placing of
cobblestones began last Thursday and it is expected the project will be
completed by the end of March, or earlier if possible. In order to achieve this,
Mr. Rojas and his crew are working in two shifts; one during the day and another
after normal hours so that the work is continuous and finishes in a timely
fashion. The question in many people's minds
at this time is the detour vehicles will use when the construction reaches the
corner by Jerry's Crab Shack going towards WASA. Mr. Rojas stated he is
consulting with Mayor Alberto Nuñez in regards to this situation. He explained
that, unfortunately, nothing concrete could be confirmed regarding a temporary
route at press time. The cost of the upgrade of
some 800 feet of Coconut Drive is estimated at $318,642.89, and is being funded
by the Government of Belize. The contracting firm of Rojas, Schulz & Nelder
was also awarded the contract for the construction of a concrete seawall at
three locations in San Pedro Town.
