Thousands of people flocked to the Old Football Field last Friday for the debut of The Great Chinese Circus. It has been a few years since the last Mexican "Big Top" made its way to this island, so the news of the circus had everyone excited. The Chinese Circus, presently touring Central America and the West Indies, came to San Pedro through the efforts of the Ambergris Caye Sports Academy (ACSA) who pre-sold tickets and arranged reduced transportation costs.
The circus featured Chinese performers from mainland China, with the exception of one very funny clown, who hails from Guatemala. The spectators were fascinated by the wonderful light show and performances that included contortionists, acrobats, jugglers, and other intricate stunts that left the crowd "biting their fingernails". From the opening act to the closing Chinese Lions dance, this colorful show was indeed a must-see event. Following its debut on Friday, more performances were scheduled through to Tuesday, May 21st to give everyone an opportunity to witness this one-of-a-kind show.
Apart from providing tons of entertainment to the people of "La Isla Bonita" the circus donated a portion of their ticket sales to the ACSA to assist them and the children of San Pedro in their sports programs. Also a "special performance" was scheduled on Tuesday with discount rates to all school children who could not afford regular shows.
Many who saw the show described this experience as if they had been transported to another part of the world where they were able to witness the unique Chinese culture. Hats off to all the performers and organizers who provided quality entertainment for the people of San Pedro.
