Cobblestone work starts on Pelican Street

Although his term as mayor will soon to be over, Mayor Alberto Nuñez has no intentions of going out of office without ensuring that projects he had begun are completed. Last Thursday morning, Mayor Alberto Nuñez signed two contracts for the upgrading and cobblestoning of two more streets in San Pedro. Signing on behalf of the San Pedro Town Council was Mayor Alberto Nuñez with Town Administrator Alberto Villanueva signing as a witness. Mr. Guillermo Rojas signed on behalf of the firm Rojas, Schulz and Nelder with Ms. Vicky Nelder signing as a witness.

The two separate contracts signed were to upgrade 1,084 linear feet encompassing Pelican Street (541 feet) and Caribeña Street (543 feet) for a total cost of $179,672.30. The money to be used for this project is the second disbursement of $150,000 promised by the Ministry of Budget Management. The first disbursement of the same amount was used by the town council to purchase the cobblestone-making machine and the materials to manufacture the cobblestones. The remaining $29,672.30 of the total cost needed for this project will be provided by the San Pedro Town Council.

According to San Pedro Town Administrator Alberto Villanueva Jr. this is also a part of the promise made by the Government of Belize to provide San Pedro with $3.197 million to be used for the upgrading of streets for the next two fiscal years (2003-4, 2004-5).

The project began on Monday at Pelican Street and work on both streets is expected to be completed in one month. According to Mr. Villanueva the work will then move on to other streets in San Pedro including Pescador and Barrier Reef Drive, Black Coral, Tarpon, Ambergris and Angel Coral Streets, as soon as the monies are received from government.

The San Pedro Sun salutes Mayor Alberto Nuñez and the San Pedro Town Council for their continued infrastructure improvements in San Pedro.
