|Cobblestone work starts on Pelican Street
Although his term as
mayor will soon to be over, Mayor Alberto Nuñez has no intentions of
going out of office without ensuring that projects he had begun are
completed. Last Thursday morning, Mayor Alberto Nuñez signed two
contracts for the upgrading and cobblestoning of two more streets in San
Pedro. Signing on behalf of the San Pedro Town Council was Mayor Alberto
Nuñez with Town Administrator Alberto Villanueva signing as a witness.
Mr. Guillermo Rojas signed on behalf of the firm Rojas, Schulz and Nelder
with Ms. Vicky Nelder signing as a witness.
The two separate contracts signed were to
upgrade 1,084 linear feet encompassing Pelican Street (541 feet) and
Caribeña Street (543 feet) for a total cost of $179,672.30. The money to
be used for this project is the second disbursement of $150,000 promised
by the Ministry of Budget Management. The first disbursement of the same
amount was used by the town council to purchase the cobblestone-making
machine and the materials to manufacture the cobblestones. The remaining
$29,672.30 of the total cost needed for this project will be provided by
the San Pedro Town Council.
According to San Pedro Town Administrator
Alberto Villanueva Jr. this is also a part of the promise made by the
Government of Belize to provide San Pedro with $3.197 million to be used
for the upgrading of streets for the next two fiscal years (2003-4,
The project began on Monday at Pelican Street and work
on both streets is expected to be completed in one month. According to
Mr. Villanueva the work will then move on to other streets in San Pedro
including Pescador and Barrier Reef Drive, Black Coral, Tarpon, Ambergris
and Angel Coral Streets, as soon as the monies are received from
