BRS Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr.
Mayor-elect Elsa Paz

History was in the making on Wednesday, March 5th, 2003, as registered voters throughout the country of Belize went to the polls to exercise their right to vote in the first-ever dual (general/local) election. The 2003 elections proved to be a very close race, both locally and nationally. For the first time since Belize's independence, a government party was re-elected, as the People's United Party (PUP) won the majority of votes in this general election (22-7).

In San Pedro, history was made as well when United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Elsa Paz was elected as the town's first woman mayor. The UDP also emerged victorious with candidate Manuel Heredia Jr. elected to serve as Belize Rural South (BRS) Area Representative, and the UDP taking five of the six seats for San Pedro Town Council. The newly-elected councilors are: UDP - Severo Guerrero Sr., Joseph Elijio, Juan Jose Alamilla, Justiniano (Nano) Guerrero, Romel Nesto Gomez, and PUP - Merlene Spain. Of the 3,712 registered voters, a total of 2,993 (2,521 - San Pedro/472 - Caye Caulker) or 80.63% of the BRS voters cast their ballots for the candidates they felt were most qualified and deserving of the opportunity to serve the residents and visitors to "La Isla Bonita". The following is a list of candidates and their total votes received.
