At the last meeting of the Saga Humane Society it was announced that the Saga Humane Society Fund Drive 2003 has yielded more than $14,000 in pledges. An overwhelming amount of generous donations were received in response to the Society's request for assistance with their efforts to maintain healthcare for the island's animal population. "Now all we need is LAND!!!" stated the Society's directors.

Land is needed so that, with the monies already collected, Saga Humane Society can build the first animal shelter/education center in Belize. It is hoped that land will be donated so that the Society can spend their savings on building kennels and a proper animal shelter as soon as possible. Currently, the Society supports San Pedro's only veterinary clinic as a means of providing health services for the animals of the island, but rent alone costs them $900 per month. The directors are hoping to find land in San Pedro that is centrally located in order to increase, or at least maintain, the number of local residents who are supporting the clinic by properly caring for their pets.

Members of the Society have met twice in the past month with Mayoress Elsa Paz regarding the ongoing challenges of stray animals in the community. It was established that the San Pedro Town Council would continue a working relationship with Saga Humane Society and endorse the Society's efforts to control the stray population. To promote this objective, a meeting will be scheduled in the near future for the Humane Society's dog licensing proposal to be heard by the town councilors. It was agreed that the Society should continue their "roundup" efforts to collect and care for stray cats and dogs.

Sponsors who pledged their support since the last published fund drive update are: Platinum ($1,001 or more) - Fido's Courtyard and Southwind Properties (upgrade).
