Press Release - San Pedro Town Council - Tuesday, May 24th, 2005 - In an effort to make this year's Dia de San Pedro celebration much bigger, the San Pedro Town Council and some of the island's leading sports fishing enthusiasts have come together to plan the first ever "Dia de San Pedro Fishing Tournament." The Council and organizers both feel that the tournament could serve as an attractive calling for fishing aficionados countrywide and abroad, and at the same time pay tribute to Saint Peter who was a fisherman himself.
The Dia de San Pedro celebrations commence on June 29th and end on July 3rd with a beach party at Central Park. During this time many activities will be held at the Old Football Field, including cultural shows, fireworks, mechanical rides, live performances, and many other surprises. The tournament will be a two-day event (Saturday, July 2nd and Sunday, July 3rd). The winner of the event, based on Most Pounds, will receive $3,000; second place - $2,000; and third place $1,000. Prizes will also be awarded in other fishing categories and boaters will have a chance to win the Calcutta prize. The organizers are currently polishing all the details to make this a first-class event, with the vision of making this tournament an annual occurrence.
Some of the most traditional observances during the celebration include a unique boat procession around the island culminating with the water vessels being blessed by the resident priest, as well as, the Misa de Gallo (a 4:00 a.m. mass for men only), followed by a breakfast at the Lions Den, and a big festival commemorating the day of St. Peter.
With the inception of the fishing tournament, this year's Dia de San Pedro festivities promise to be bigger and better. More information on the tournament, as well as other schedule events will be announced in the near future. On the meantime, the organizers of the tournament are asking the business community to support this event in any way possible.
