The Dia de San Pedro Festivities organized by the San Pedro Town Council officially started on Wednesday morning. Residents of "La Isla Bonita" were roused from their sleep on Wednesday morning by the sound of sirens from the fire engine. No, no fire, but a wake-up call for all fisherman wanting to attend the Misa de Gallo (Fisherman's Mass) at 4:00 a.m. at the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church.
At 6:00 a.m. the large group of men and their male children participating in this traditional event walked to the nearby Lion's Den for a communal breakfast before the procession of boats took place. Participants in this year's breakfast received a complimentary coffee mug with the picture of St. Peter imprinted on it! Father Paul Grala jumped from boat to boat blessing both the drivers and the boats on this sacred of days.
Later in the evening, a Día de San Pedro Street Procession took place through the primary streets of "La Isla Bonita." The festivities were officially kicked off at 7:30 p.m. (The San Pedro Sun will have that story on next week's issue.)
