Members of the House of Commons from the United Kingdom paid a courtesy call to Belize as guests of the National Assembly. These five gentlemen visited San Pedro Town on Wednesday, July 13th, 2005 to meet with Belize Rural South Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr. and Mayor Elsa Paz. During their stop they were given a tour of the island and had the opportunity to visit Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark-Ray Alley.
The visit parliamentarians are from the United Kingdom Branch of the Commonwealth Parliament Association (CPA) of which Belize is a member of. The delegation which was headed by Ian Stewart included John Cummings, Wayne david, Nigel Evans, and Daniel Kawczyshi with Ann Hodkinson as secretary. In an interview with The San Pedro Sun Ian Stewart said, “We do this in order to exchange ideas. Our styles of government are the same and as a result, we have much to learn from each other.” This visit is to promote the advancement of parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding democratic governance. This in turn, builds an informed parliamentary community able to deepen the Commonwealth democratic commitment and allows members to further cooperation among its parliament and legislatures.
Among the visitors were representatives from both major English parties; the Labor Party and Conservative party.
