On Tuesday, August 16th, 2005, police announced the arrest of those believed to have committed the murder of Antonio Almendarez, security guard of Fido’s Courtyard, which occurred on August 26th, 2005. 17-year-old Bernard Williams and 23-year-old Luis Lalin were jointly arrested and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Williams was arrested in San Pedro Town late Saturday evening while Lalin was picked up at the Hattieville Prison where he is serving time for an unrelated drug trafficking charge. In an interview with The San Pedro Sun, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chester Williams explained that it was a joint effort between police officers in San Pedro Town, Belize City and Belmopan Crime Unit. According to Officer Williams a third individual, Austin Mungelia would also appear in court on Wednesday, August 17th, 2005, charged with Almendarez’s murder, as well. Officer Williams went on to explain that two of the alleged murders are from Belize City while one was originally from Punta Gorda. Investigations revealed that they had moved to San Pedro Town a couple of months prior to the murder.
Both, Bernard Williams and Luis Lalin were remanded to Hattieville Prison.
