On August 11th, concerned citizens met with Mayor Elsa Paz, Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr., and Inspector of Police Juachim Sabal to find solutions to fight crime in Ambergris Caye. In response to citizen outrage over the increase of crime on the island, the San Pedro Town Council has formed the aptly named Ambergris Caye Safety Committee (ACSA).
Members of the committee plan to act as mediators between police, the San Pedro Town Council, Area Representative’s office, Neighborhood Watches, Justices of the Peace, security guards, and other committees to formulate a plan to alleviate the increased crime situation on Ambergris Caye. Elected officials for ACSC are as follows: Chairman – Doug Campbell, Vice Chairman – Steve Spiro, Secretary – Jules Escalante, and Treasurer – Einer Gomez.
Chairman Campbell spoke with The San Pedro Sun to shed some light on what the committee is presently working on. He stated, “The Ambergris Caye Safety Committee is presently considering many proposals to increase the safety and well-being of all persons who live on or visit Ambergris Caye. The Committee will facilitate communication between the San Pedro Town Council, the Police, the Neighborhood Watches, the Justices of the Peace and other civic organizations.” And, when asked why form such a committee, he commented, “The inhabitants of San Pedro are people from many different ethnic groups and races, most of whom enjoy living on our island in utmost amicability. This is a part of the friendly charm that attracts visitors to Ambergris Caye and the atmosphere the committee wishes to promote.”
At the present moment the committee meets every week in order to create a plan of action.
