St. George's Caye Day is celebrated countrywide as a day to honor the battle which occurred in St. George's Caye. During this holiday, San Pedro Town rejoices in its patriotism and took the opportunity to coronate its Miss San Pedro 2005/06 Norma Leticia Lara.
The festivities kicked off with Miss Lara and the outgoing Queen Miss Roxanna Bradley being escorted into Central Park and up on the stage, where she joined the other Miss San Pedro delegates, Karina Rejón, Chantel Castillo, Amarilis Peña and Ines Reyes. Mayor Elsa Paz welcomed all those who had gathered for this special ceremony and welcomed Miss Bradley to perform the official coronation. The crowd cheered as Miss Lara accepted her responsibilities as the new beauty ambassador of "La Isla Bonita," as well as accepting her crown, sash, scepter and cape.
After the official ceremonies ended, the San Pedro High School marching band beat its drums signaling the commencement of the parade. Miss Lara and the rest of the delegates were escorted to their places on the beautifully decorated float and began handing out candy to school children. The parade took off and delighted people as it made its way through the main streets of town.
Throughout the day, countless activities were held in honor of the special day, including a tug-of-war competition. Two events were held for the first time during St. George's Caye Day, which include a children's bicycle race. The race was open for children between the ages of nine and twelve. 28 kids signed up for the race, which had them pedal two laps from Central Park to the Casino down to the San Pedro Roman Catholic School and back to the park. Jesse Guerrero came out victorious as he took first place, while "Saul" took second and Berlioz Guerrero rode in the third position.
Another competition which was a first for this holiday was the first ever St. George's Caye Day Family Fishing Tournament. This event was open to everyone (families, groups of friends, staff groups, organizations, etc.). and the official fishing time was at 6:00 a.m. and ended at around 5:00 p.m. At the end of the day, the grand prize winners were Stacey, belonging to Alberto Bradley and family who won the grand prize of $1,000.
