San Pedro Sun at the Belize Expo 2005!

The Belize Expo 2005 took place last weekend, September 17th and 18th at the Saint John's College gymnasium in Belize City. It was a massive event, both in terms of turnout and displays. Apart from all the good deals and great food, one factor that made the day a bit of a mess was the weather. The oppressive temperature made shuttling through the event like eating cotton candy in a cauldron, as products and people were wilting like fast fading flowers.

A total of 125 producers, distributors, manufacturers and service industries displayed and shared their commodities at this year's Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry Expo. The annual event was one of the biggest events organized by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It has been known for the past nine years as the biggest trade show for Belize and it was a perfect opportunity for members and other businesses, who were not a part of the Chamber, to come out and showcase what they had to offer all in one place. The booths were divided into different sectors including; manufacturing, servicing, merchandising, diplomatic corps, and new businesses.

An extra special appearance was one booth in particular; The San Pedro Sun Newspaper. The Sun was visited by thousands as they signed up for subscriptions and advertising. "It was amazing to find out how many people around the country know of The San Pedro Sun, either by purchasing it through one of our distributors or by reading the paper online. The response was spectacular!" commented Ron Sniffin, owner/editor. "What made the days extra special was walking through the compound and seeing everyone with a San Pedro Sun on hand."

GOB gives books to Local Elementary Schools

San Pedro and Caye Caulker Elementary schools received over 300 books for students in Infant I and II and Standard I classes. Since the creation of the Poverty Alleviation Fund four years ago, schools on the outlying Cayes have been receiving these books from the Ministry of Education, according Alex Nunez, who is the Education Officer for San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

The Poverty Alleviation Fund was created to help students who could not afford to buy books on their own. This year, 160 children attending Caye Caulker R.C., San Pedro R.C. and New Horizon SDA received both a reading and math book.
