Juan Alamilla

Political career, how long?
About 12 years.

Why get into politics?
Because I thought that San Pedro needed a lot of things and it was not getting what it needed. That is the reason that I got into it.

Some say past administrations have made several mistakes; in your opinion, what is the biggest one and why?
One of the biggest mistakes that I have seen is that some politicians do not fight for their community, they fight for their party. That causes a lot of problems in San Pedro.

How would you properly cater to the needs of our community?
Well, first of all, I have seen a lot of problems in different areas but the biggest problem I see is that San Pedro is not getting a fair share of the pie. That we are producing millions of dollars for Belize and are only receiving $69,000 back. And that does not help with the different areas and I believe that if we work hard and fight for that, we can help those people around the island.

What makes you suitable to occupy a council’s position?
Well, I have shown that I can do a lot. The different projects around the island, the San Mateo Subdivision with the water and electricity, I have been the planner and I guess you could say engineer for them. I have shown and proven that I can do a lot.

In order to be a good councilor, what do you consider are three traits that one must have?
First of all you have to be honest to yourself and you have to be ready to work for your town. Time is essential; coming to a meeting is not enough you have to be around the people to see what their needs are. But you also need dedication.

What do you think would make the community better?
I know what would make San Pedro better is uniting and joining forces whether you are a PUP or UDP. Only joining forces can we fight for what the island really needs.

How do you go about accomplishing that?
First of all, the best way to accomplish it is by getting closer to God. We need to first get close to God only this way can we achieve it.

Everybody talks about marketing our community, what in your opinion is the best way to do that?
I have noticed that in other places, that although the items and services there are the same price as here or more expensive, the air fare to get there is so much cheaper than to get here. If we put air fares at a less cost I believe tourism would increase more.

How do you think development should be handled?
First of all, we need to join forces because as a town we are divided. This way we can have a proper plan to grow not only in the economics part, but in fighting crime which is bothering our community.

Why should voters cast their vote for you?
Well, I have shown that I can do a lot for San Pedro. We need tot fight more for San Pedro because we are not getting what we need. Let’s get closer to God that is something that I emphasize a lot, I believe that by doing that we can all get together and get what San Pedro deserves.

Political career, how long?
Political career is first time. Political experience it’s been a while. I was the first Mayor’s secretary, where I gained my experience with Mr. Gilberto “Chico” Gomez during his term. And, for four years, I was Office Administrator for Belize Rural South under the guidance of Miss Patty Arceo.

Why get into politics?
The reason is because I am a mother and I grew up in a carefree San Pedro and I want the same for my son. I want to work for my island; I want to ensure that San Pedro goes into the tourism industry and for us to educate our children. To be a politician is a lot of sacrifice, but in the end it pays off when we have a better San Pedro.

Some say past administrations have made several mistakes; in your opinion, what is the biggest one, and why?
Well, I wouldn’t want to say that either parties have made mistakes because we all learn from our mistakes. What I want to do is work for the betterment of our island, better streets, better garbage systems, the beaches, a better tourism industry and a better San Pedro for us residents to live in.

How would you properly cater to the needs of our community?
The PUP 7 has a strong slate so we have divided ourselves into teams, because we cannot cater to the entire island. But, being prepared and working into teams what our objective is not to work for a part of San Pedro but for the entire San Pedro because after all we are all part of San Pedro.

What makes you suitable to occupy a council’s position?
I have been in the political field for years, I have worked with Central Government and basically I took the leadership training and I love to work with people. All my life I have dedicated myself to helping people, as a community person, as a Justice of the Peace and now as a politician.

What do you think would make the community better?
Being united, everyone working for the same purpose.

How do you go about accomplishing that?
We have to reach everyone make sure that we are all united. We want to make sure that we all work for San Pedro because after all it is a better tomorrow for all of us.

Everybody talks about marketing our community, what in your opinion is the best way to do that?
We have to ensure that we are prepared for that and San Pedro being a tourism island, we have to ensure that we are properly advertised internationally and locally. We have to also ensure that our tour guides, our hotel industry also become a part of this move in order to make our tourism industry grow healthily.

How do you think development should be handled?
I believe that we would have to go to the master plan, we can not say that we will handle it this way we have to ensure that we go accordingly to the master plan.

Why should voters cast their vote for you?
I would say overall it is not casting a vote for Nai Sabido, it’s casting a vote for the PUP, a party that cares for this island that has been built by the PUP. And, we are asking for the support, let us come back, let us work again. We can not do it with people voting for me, we can only do it with people voting for the entire team, a team that is united for the betterment for San Pedro.
