On Friday, February 10th, 2006, residents of San Pedro Town gathered at the newly renovated Boca del Rio Park to officially inaugurate it. Mayor Elsa Paz and her councilors along with United Democratic Party (UDP) councilor candidate Pablo Ico were on hand for the grand festivity.
Ryan Murray, UDP Coordinator, served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, stating that, “It is a good day for the UDP today, the opening of the Boca del Rio Park is certainly a great milestone for the party.” Murray invited Mayor Paz to the podium. She commented, “With all good things there is always the negative impact surrounding a community. There are the constant dangers that our youth are faced with today. Drugs, alcoholism, prostitution and crime are only a few of the pressures that are at our doorstep. For this reason it is crucial that we provide healthy activities for our youths. Today, we not only inaugurate a basketball court, but we are providing better opportunities for our youths. […] Let us remember that they are our future and the key motive for us to do the impossible to provide a better tomorrow.”
Area Representative for Belize Rural South, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. stated that parks are an essential part of a community. “As leaders, we need to do something to keep our youth out of the streets; it is our job to do so. That is what we are accomplishing today!”
After the brief ceremony, Mayor Paz had the honors of making the first basket in the newly renovated court. A friendly match between boys and girls took place shortly after.
The new court boasts a resurfaced court, new paint job, new backboard, and a set of new lights. There are plans to beautify the park more in the near future.
