It was a monster finish at the MCC Grounds last week when primary schools competed against other schools to qualify in the football Nationals. Schools that participated from San Pedro were the female team of the New Horizon Seventh Day school and the boys of the RC school, where they both emerged victors and brought home 1st and 2nd place trophies, here is how it went down.

At the field, hundreds of children from different schools across Belize were all hyped and primed to get the competition started. Teams competed against each other in a double elimination round and in the first round, the RC boys went head to head against St. John’s Anglican. At the end of regulation the game was tied at 1-1, so they went into penalties. In the penalty round, San Pedro represented and won 4-3. In game two, the boys matched up against St. Ignatius for a tough bout, but at the end, the RC boys triumphed thanks to a fantastic goal by John Romero. The team went on to win the game 1-0 and the 1st place trophy in the boys category. Over in the female division, the New Horizon girls succumbed to a loss in their first match, but were still in the mix with a final game which they needed a win to stay alive. In game two, they clashed with Holy Redeemer and boy what a tough match that was. No doubt, both schools were determined to get the win, but at the end of the final whistle the SP girls were victors, 1-0. Despite their win against Holy Redeemer, San Pedro girls settled for 2nd place and Holy Redeemer placed first.

Both male and female teams took up a spot in the Belize District finals and will now represent the Belize District in the Nationals that will be held in Stann Creek in May. The dates have not been confirmed, but The Sun will keep you posted on any further developments. The New Horizon SDA School would like to take the time to congratulate both teams for an outstanding performance and a very special thank you to Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr. for his contribution towards the school’s success.
