|Paisano was a popular icon in San Pedro. With him, a great lesson can be learned, which is the reason for the SP Art Group’s paintings.|
A popular icon that is truly missed in San Pedro Town is the infamous Paisano, who departed from this world close to six months ago. However, twelve homes or businesses will be able to have a piece of history adorn their walls with one of twelve watercolor paintings of Habib Hajara (Paisano).
The San Pedro Art Group dedicated one of their painting sessions to Paisano. At the end of the session, 12 watercolor paintings of the “man with his conch shell” had been beautifully portrayed. The seven members will exhibit their work at the Orange Gallery located on Coconut Drive from June 2nd to June 9th.
A grand opening reception will be held on Friday, June 2nd, 2006 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. with refreshments being served. All 12 paintings will be on sale and the proceeds will go towards the San Pedro Town Library Children’s Art Projects.
In an interview with artist Rose Escalante, she commented on why the group choose Paisano, “We wanted people to know how bad drugs are and what they can do for you. Paisano was quite wealthy when he first came to the island and he got dragged down because of drugs. We want youths to know that drugs are not the way to go.” Mrs. Escalante also explained why the San Pedro Arts Group chose the San Pedro Library to be the recipient of their proceeds. She stated, “There is so much better for the youth out there. So, after we finished all 12 paintings, what to do with the money. All of us decided to donate it to the children’s art projects. We want the children to get excited with art and they need supplies to start up with it.”
Support a worthy cause and join the San Pedro Art Group at their grand opening reception tomorrow! See you there!!!
