There was singing, dancing, eating and drinking galore for this past weekend's festivities as San Pedro celebrated it's patron saint's day!

With the sounds and lights of fireworks, the Día de San Pedro festivities officially kick started on Thursday night. The Welcome Address was delivered by Mayor Elsa Paz and she took the time to comment on the history of the Día de San Pedro, “A heartfelt welcome to everyone on this our annual celebration when we pay tribute to our Patron Saint – Saint Peter or more traditionally known in our Spanish language – El Día de el Señor San Pedro.” She continued to state, “As Mayor, but most of all as a San Pedrana I appeal to you to instill these traditions to your children so that they in turn may pass it on to their children. Just don’t tell them. Participate and take them with you so that they can see first-hand what a beautiful family event this can be.”

Present for the special occasion was Marisela Moreno, General Director for Social Development at the Municipality of Othon P. Blanco. She commented on the importance of such festivities on small communities. Moreno stated that it is critical that families embrace the culture and traditions. Guest Speaker Abel Guerrero took the public back in time, to the time when San Pedro was a small village working on the coconut plantations. To the times of way back when and compared them to today’s time.

Following the Vote of Thanks delivered by Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr., San Pedro Lions Queen/Belize Zone 59 Queen Delsie Graniel delighted everyone with a beautiful cultural presentation, highlighting the beauty of being a Mestizo.

The Ballet Folklorico del Ayuntamiento de Othon P. Blanco showed their fantastic moves with their beautiful costumes. With three different acts they will certainly be a crowd favorite for the International Costa Maya Festival.

Throughout the weekend, the mechanical rides entertained those young and the ones young at heart. Other activities planned for the weekend were the presentations of Barbara’s Dance Group on Friday and the San Pedro Dance Company on Saturday. On Sunday, a grand beach party was held at the Caliente/Pier Lounge Beach. The Fishing Tournament culminated there as well with various prizes handed out the different winners.
