Game one and two tipped off in blazing San Pedro as the TigerSharks hosted the University of Belize Black Jaguars for the title to take all. It is a win or go home series and for the Sharks they are certainly not taking anything lightly and they handled their business on the court with a 2-0 series lead. The scores are in, courtesy of Philip Waight; here is the recap of the weekend games.
Folks, the two teams brought their game faces since the championship is on the line. At tip off, fans anticipated a full force showdown on the court and a fantastic match overall. In the first game, both teams played on both the defensive and offensive end, getting stops and making several quick buckets. It was TigerSharks superman Keith Acosta with a good game as he made his team better by passing and making good decisions with the ball. At the end of the first, the visiting Jaguars were trailing by a triple bucket 18-15. In the second, the home team was cruising as they lead by double digits all the way into intermission 39-26. In the third, the Jaguars tried to make a comeback but the Sharks would not quit with their game plan and led all through the third by as high as 17 points to close the quarter. In the fourth, the Jaguars stunned their fans with such a poor performance that in the fourth quarter, the Sharks held them down to only 7 points for the quarter. It was all TigerSharks for most of the game; the die hard Sharks fans loved every minute of it. It was a blow out win 86-51 and with the win, the Sharks went up 1-0 to lead this best of five series. On a losing effort, UB’s Claude Jones, Darren Bovell and Jeff Clinton were the scorers with 10 points a piece, but they needed the input of the other players to make a run. The Sharks were led by top scorer Keith Acosta, who finished with 20 points, 4 assist and 14 rebounds with the help of the big man Ernest Broaster who finished with 19 points, 3 assists and 7 boards. It was a team effort all the way and exceptional coaching by the Coach of the Year, Brads Neal.
Let’s turn to chapter two in the series; on Saturday the sports arena came ablaze once again for the second meeting of both clubs. It was a must win for the Black Jaguars, but again the Sharks proved to be the top dogs of their home court. At tip off, the Sharks were looking to continue from where they left off the night before but the Jaguars had a different game plan. The Jaguars came out with fury and a determined mind set for a victory and at the end of the first quarter, the Sharks were allowed only 8 points! Jaguars took a comfortable double digit lead heading into the second 8-23. In the second, the Belmopan ballers shone on the court with a turnaround comeback from game one. UB would go up by 8 at the end of the half. It was a thrilling third quarter as the Sharks put the pedal to the medal and went full speed on taking over the game. At the end of the third, the game was tied at 60-60 and the game’s intensity grew with every minute on the clock. Led by Keith Acosta, the Sharks went on a run and it was no looking back after that leadership role. The big man posted 29 points, 5 assists and 7 boards, and his trusty teammate Stephen Williams cashed in 20 points, 4 assists and 6 rebounds. Over at the Jaguars end, Darren Bovell finished with 20 points, 1 assist and 3 rebounds. The game ended 92-81 and the Sharks now lead the series 2-0. It was a turnaround effort and team chemistry that got the TigerSharks another huge win over the UB crew. Not once, but twice, the Sharks defended its turf! Congrats and let’s finish business this weekend in Belmopan. Games 3 and 4 will be played on Friday and Saturday, July 7th and 8th in Belmopan at the UB Basketball arena. Viva TigerSharks!
