|Mrs. Flora Ancona is one of 25 Belizeans and the only San Pedro resident to be honored at the "Tribute to Belizeans" in Belize City. |
Mrs. Flora Ancona was one of the seventeen Belizeans who were honored at the Turton Library Center in Belize City, of which she was the only resident of San Pedro Town. On September 13th, she will again be honored in a Tribute to Belizean Patriots to be held at the Bliss Center for Performing Arts. Mrs. Ancona will be one of 25 Belizeans who will receive an Award of Merit from Governor General Sir Colville Young and Prime Minister Said Musa.
Throughout the years, Mrs. Ancona has helped the community in any which way she could. She was born on May 17th, 1951 to parents Rosendo Graniel and Marina Trejo. She married the love of her life, Manuel Ancona and the couple has four children: Manuel Jr., Alberto, Eddie and Florita. Mrs. Ancona also has one adopted daughter, Linden.
In 1980, when most airlines only had one plane and offered one flight every morning and sometimes in the afternoons, Flora and her husband rented a little house (Katrinca) that was sitting on the northern end of the airstrip. They decided to sell soft drinks, coffee and snacks in the house. Flora also sold tickets for Tropic Air. As Tropic Air grew, so did Mrs. Ancona’s life. She moved into a new office, sold tickets, dispatched airlines, welcomed visitors and kept the office going. The office continued to expand and Flora soon became the Head of Operations (data entry, reservations, public relations, scheduling flights, etc.) The snack place at the Katrinca that Flora and her husband operated has now developed into what is today the Tropical Take-Out Restaurant.
Mrs. Ancona has acquired the name “Mother Teresa” for her willingness to assist those in need. In her spare time, Flora does a lot of community work. She was among the first women to join the local Lions Club. An exemplary member of the Lioness Auxiliary, Mrs. Ancona sold barbecues to support the local Lions Club. She has also been engaged in cultural events, talent shows and beauty pageants. As a devoted Catholic, Mrs. Ancona finds time to visit the sick and help the needy. Flora Graniel Ancona is a loving mother, devoted house wife, social worker, professional and above all, a neighborly friend.
It is no wonder she is receiving yet another meritorious honor – a true Belizean patriot.
