Press Release – San Pedro Town Council – May 22nd, 2007 - Attention all lovers of sports fishing – the Annual Dia de San Pedro Fishing Tournament is just around the corner. This year this much-anticipated event will be held on Saturday, June 30th and Sunday, July 1st. The Council and organizers both feel that this tournament serves as an attractive calling for fishing aficionados countrywide and abroad, and at the same time pay tribute to Saint Peter who was a fisherman himself.
Attractive first, second, third, fourth and fifth cash prizes will be awarded to the boast with the Most Poundage. Prizes will also be awarded in other fishing categories such as: Top Junior Angler, Top Female Angler, Heaviest Blue Marlin, Heaviest White Marlin, Heaviest Kingfish, Heaviest Tuna, Heaviest Sailfish, Heaviest Wahoo and Heaviest Dorado. This year, the Dia de San Pedro Fishing Tournament logo that has been used in the past, was digitally enhanced by Luis Zapata of Designing Solutions (pro bono). This new logo will now serve as the official insignia for this event.
The Dia de San Pedro celebrations will commence on June 28th and culminate on July 1st with the Fishing Tournament Awards Gala. During this time many activities will be held at the Old Football Field, including cultural shows, fireworks, mechanical rides, live performances, and many other surprises.
Some of the most traditional observances during the celebration include a unique boat procession around the island culminating with the water vessels being blessed by the resident priest, as well as, the Misa de Gallo (a 4:00 a.m. mass for men only), a breakfast for the entire town at the Lions Den, and a big festival commemorating the day of St. Peter.
More information on the tournament, as well as other scheduled events will be announced in the near future. On the meantime, the organizers of the tournament are asking the business community to support this event in any way possible.
