International Star – who will it be this year? That is the question that was pondered upon as soon as the dates for the International Costa Maya Festival were announced. Slated for August 2nd to the 5th, the festival organizers promise lots of great things.
A highlight of the festival is International Night, Saturday, August 4th. And this year, singing his greatest hits will be Reyli Barba. Known for his hits such as “La Descarada” from the hit Mexican soap opera Rubi, many have followed the romantic side of the once member of the band Elefante.
Having formed Elefante in the late nineties, and led them to a good amount of success alongside Spanish rocker Joaquin Sabina, Reyli needed more creative freedom than the well-established, even pigeon-holed Latin Alternative Elefante could offer. Though Elefante were known for creative musical ideas and excellent songwriting, Reyli longed to be able to express his more emotive, romantic side. Barba left Elefante in 2003, the same year that he released his solo debut, En la Luna, which was met with much acclaim. The radio hit “Desde que llegaste” launched Reyli into the public eye. The single was featured in the Mexican film Ladies’ Night, and remained on the charts for months. His third hit off his first record to make a splash in film/television was “Se quien soy,” which was featured as the theme song for the Mexican version of Big Brother. Having sold over 300,000 copies of his first release, it seems that Reyli’s risky decision in leaving Elefante was well made. However one of his greatest hits still making waves on The Reef Radio airwaves is “Amor del Bueno.” With a great repertoire of songs, Reyli will definitely make a big splash at this year’s International Costa Maya Festival.
Between Reyli, the Reina de la Costa Maya, the cultural presentations, and the great entertainment being planned, Costa Maya is shaping up to be sensational as ever.
