Rough seas were a detriment, but it didn’t stop the “Fish Tales” crew from reeling in the prize winner!

Karen Canul - “Lady Angler”

The Wahoo season started off with a BANG! Big fish hit the docks and teams won big money in the second annual Wahoo Challenge which was held over the weekend at the Captain Morgan’s Retreat. Spearheaded by the fishing aficionados at the San Pedro Game Fish Association, the event drew a fair crowd who came out to catch a glimpse of the action at the weigh in station. After two days of the competition, team “Fish Tales” emerged victorious.

Despite the gloomy weather, a total of 14 boats made it out for the bimini start at the Ambergris Divers dock area and that marked the start of a two day fishing expedition. The excitement would build up on the second day as anglers made their way in with their biggest catch of the day. A point was given for every pound on the combined weight of the two biggest Wahoos. There was tremendous spirit of cooperation amongst the anglers and crews in insuring that every boat that participates had a decent chance at catching some nice fish. Along with the fishing, visitors were able to unwind with friends and families and enjoy the luxurious amenities that Captain Morgan’s offered.

Collecting a sweet cash prize of $5,000 and a trophy was team “Fish Tales” captained by Roberto Canul who took the top prize with two winning Wahoos weighing 38 and 37 pounds respectively for a total of 75 points. Team “Fish Tales” would walk home quite content with $5,000 and a trophy. Second place went to boat “Valerie” which was captained by Gilberto “Hilly Boo” Lara who hoisted in a 33 pound Wahoo to take the runner up position. Team Valerie walked away with a trophy and $3,000 in cash. Settling for third place was ‘Captain Morgan’s Contender” captained by Andy Nuñez. That boat hoisted a 32 pound Wahoo which earned them a trophy and $1,000 in cash. A pound was the difference between second and third place, ouch! Other consolation and cash prizes were given for “Lady Angler” which went to Karen Canul of ‘Fish Tales’ with the prize winning 37 pound Wahoo. For her big fish, she took home $250 and a necklace with pendant. The ‘Junior Angler’ prize went to Byron Lara of team ‘Valerie’ and he won $250 and a trophy, whilst James Ritchie was given the prize for Heaviest Wahoo with his 38 pound catch and he walked home with $250 plus a trophy. The first place Calcutta prize was won by “Fish Tales”, who took home $2,500 in extra cash, whilst second place was given to Jenny Staines who took home $800 cash.

Thriving in its second year, this Wahoo Challenge proved an extremely rewarding experience for dedicated big game fishing enthusiasts as well as novice anglers wishing to further their knowledge of the ultimate blue water fishing challenge. Already excited about next year’s tournament, organizers promise that the 2007/2008 season will have a third leg PLUS a surprise twist that will make everyone in the fishing world stand up and notice San Pedro’s Wahoo challenges.

Congratulations to all anglers and organizers in this year’s Wahoo fishing challenge! Wahoooo!
