On February 15th, 2008, the Government of Belize under the Ministry of Natural Resources issued a press release which served as a letter of caution to the general public informing them that The Ministry announces the suspension of land title and lease hold issuances at the Land Registry, Land Titles Unit and National Estate Section respectively, while an assessment of these sections of the Ministry is conducted. The suspension takes immediate effect and will end on 14th March 2008. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment apologizes to the general public for the inconveniences that may be caused during this period.
Residents of Ambergris Caye soon enough began hearing rumors that lease holders on both Colonia San Diego Phase 1 and Phase 2 were under scrutiny and that soon enough, those titles would be taken away and re-distributed.
Speaking with Wilbert Vallejos, National Estate Officer, The San Pedro Sun discovered that as stated on the abovementioned press release, transactions carried out in referral to land titles and leases would be halted temporarily. If it is discovered that any of these was handed out without going through the proper transactions first, then those will be dealt with accordingly. No one that went through the correct process has anything to fear. Their lands will remain on their hands, explained Vallejos.
Should there be any problems with any of the parcels, Vallejos states that owners of the lease or title will be contacted immediately. Should you require additional information, please contact Mr. Vallejos at the National Estate Department at telephone number 822-2249.
