The Wahoo season started off with a BANG! Big fish hit the dock and teams won big money in the third annual Wahoo Challenge which was held over the weekend at Captain Morgan’s Retreat. Spearheaded by the fishing aficionados at the San Pedro Game Fish Association, the event drew a fair crowd who came out to catch a glimpse of the action at the weigh in station. After a tough day out at sea and in a much paid off event, “Mad Storme” captained by Adrian Heusner took the competition by storm and was dubbed as Top Boat in the challenge.
A total of twenty-one (21) boats took part in the fishing challenge and at 6:00am on Saturday they were off to cast their reels into the seas, anticipating the biggest catch of the day. Big fish hit the docks as early as 4:00pm and at the weigh in station, dozens gathered for the official weigh in. After a scrumptious dinner was served buffet style at Captain Morgan’s, the award ceremony ensued. And the winners are: Top Boat went to “Mad Storme”, captained by Adrian Heusner, with his two biggest Wahoos combining to a total weight of 81 pounds, for the handsome cash prize of $3,000 plus a trophy. Captain Morgan’s The “Contender” captained by Andres Nuñez took second prize of $1,500 plus trophy for their two combined Wahoos that totaled 62 pounds. No stranger to the fishing scene, “Aaliyah Marlee”, captained by Enrique Marin, settled for third prize of $500 with its combined wahoos that totaled 48 pounds. The Marins also took home prizes for ‘Biggest Wahoo’ of 48 pounds which netted a $1,000 cash prize plus trophy. ‘Junior Angler’ was won by Enrique Marin Jr., who took home $250 cash plus a trophy. ‘Female Angler’ went to Karen Riley on board “The Contender” who took home $250 plus a trophy.
According to President of the San Pedro Game Fish Association (SPGFA), Jennie Staines, this year’s competition had the biggest Calcutta bidding yet. Adrian Heusner onboard “Mad Storme” took home first place Calcutta prize of $5,580 and Ernie Olmstead of Captain Morgan’s took home the second Calcutta prize of $3,720 in cash. This year, stated Staines, more participation was seen and the Game Fish Association is gearing up for the Dorado Rodeo which is slated for May 24th, 2009. On behalf of the SPGFA, special recognition goes out to the main sponsors; Elsa Paz, SPTC, and Captain Morgan’s Retreat, because if not for them, the event would not have been such a success.
This Wahoo Challenge proved an extremely rewarding experience for dedicated big game fishing enthusiasts as well as novice anglers wishing to further their knowledge of the ultimate Wahoo fishing challenge. Congratulations to all anglers in this year’s Wahoo fishing challenge!
