The newly re-elected UDP Town Council.

With much festivity and enthusiasm, the UDP celebrated their victory in grand style.

Following a landslide victory countrywide, the United Democratic Party (UDP) held rallies in every municipality. On Saturday, March 7th, the UDP took to the streets celebrating their victory and paraded and danced through the main streets of San Pedro Town. After starting near the airstrip just after 6:00 in the evening, the parade wiggled its way through most principal streets of “La Isla Bonita”.

The parade was led by La Isla Bonita Elementary Marching Band after which the re-elected Town Council followed suit. Mayor Elect Elsa Paz was flanked by her councilors as they waved at the residents who stood at the street sides and on their verandahs as the parade passed. A large crowd of UDP supporters proudly dressed their golf carts with their party colors and peacefully but enthusiastically and energetically joined in the victory parade. Hyped party supporters chanted “UDP: All The Way,” as they danced and waved flags high in the air. The parade ended at the Central Park, where the newly re-elected members of the San Pedro Town Council addressed the multitude.

First to speak was the UDP Executive member Manuel Lieva, who congratulated the UDP 7 on their victory. Each councilor also went to the podium and briefly addressed the supporters all echoing their gratitude for their support and promising to bring betterment to the municipality. Mayor Elect Paz explained that while it was a hard fight battle, she is pleased that the citizenry came out to support her team. Paz said that it was a people’s victory that led to the UDP topping the polls.

Present at the ceremony were two term Mayors, Enrique Hilberto Campos of Corozal Town and Simeon Lopez of Belmopan City. Mayor Campos said that he is proud that San Pedro voted for Elsa Paz so that progress continues on the island. On the other hand, Mayor Lopez stressed on the historic win for Paz and her team. Guest speakers included the Area Representative and Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. and the Deputy Prime Minister of Belize, Honorable Gaspar Vega. Both Ministers expressed their thanks to the electorates for re-electing a UDP Town Council and they promised to work closer with the local authorities to improve the standard of living for San Pedro Town.

Following the speeches, the crowd was entertained with the music of Super Furia from Orange Walk Town. The Mayor elect and her team will be sworn in on Saturday, March 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Central Park.
