To honor all local mothers, the San Pedro Town Council held their annual Mother’s Day celebration last Saturday evening. The old football field (Sacachispas) was filled to capacity with hundreds of mothers in attendance enjoying this special day.
Upon entering the gate, mothers received a beautiful souvenir and a raffle ticket, which would allow them a chance to win one of several prizes. Masters of Ceremonies for the evening was Reef Radio’s own Senator Eiden Salazar, who proudly took center stage.
Mayor Elsa Paz then recited a special poem for all wonderful mothers in attendance, after which mommies sat back and enjoyed various performances from the San Pedro Dance Company, Barbara’s Dance Group and the Rock in Peace Band. During the course of the night, mothers got the opportunity to win several prizes, such as microwaves, televisions and washing machines as they participated in several games including musical chairs. As the mothers enjoyed the night away, they were served with a delicious meal consisting of turkey with all its trimmings, soft drinks and a delicious slice of chocolate cake.
The highlight of the night was the announcement of the 2009 Mother of the Year. This year’s number one mother was Mrs. Monica Vasquez. A well-respected, wonderful mother, Mrs. Vasquez, was crowned by 2008 Mother of the Year Juanita Ake and received a cash prize of $500.
The mothers were then entertained by International comedian “Tiffany” from Merida, Yucatan in Mexico. Tiffany rocked the night as she performed her various numbers imitating Mexico’s Paquita la de Barrio, Laura Leon, and Alejandra Guzman amongst others.
Over a hundred volunteers including members from the, the San Pedro Town Council employees, community members and students from the San Pedro High School assisted in making the Mother’s Day extravaganza a success. Congratulations!
