San Pedro Town is the youngest municipality in Belize and on Friday evening, Sanpedranos came out in numbers to celebrate with much pride, 25 years of being declared a town. History, music, dance, parade, special presentation and a midnight fireworks display were all a part of the celebration to commemorate San Pedro’s silver anniversary.
Learning institutions from all levels partook in the annual township day parade led by former and current members of the local municipality. By 5 p.m., students were ready with their float portraying the image of San Pedro twenty five years ago. Most of the floats displayed ideas of a San Pedro dependent on the sea, in a laidback setting with rustic thatch huts. The parade started from the Old Football Field and went through the principal streets of the Town and ended right back where they started. This year’s winning float was ABC Preschool.
Later in the evening the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) proceeded with the official ceremony to commemorate the occasion of the town’s birthday. The ceremony had in attendance members of the business community on the island, government officials, diplomats, former mayors and town councilors, members of the current municipality and various individuals that have contributed to the growth of the island.
During the ceremony the official flag of San Pedro Town was unveiled and flown for the first time on the island. The flag was designed by Germain Tillett; the colors of the flag are red and green representing the colors of the Patron Saint San Pedro. The white crossing the center of the flag is a reminder of the peaceful life that the island has lived. The emblem exhibits the map of Ambergris Caye and its riches, which are its beaches and marine life. In addition, one of the highlights of the event was the awarding of all council members since 1984 to present. Each of the past and current council members were presented with awards and a flag memorabilia while past mayors received an engraved crystal. Flag memorabilia were also awarded to the visiting dignitaries.
After the official ceremony, the night continued with dance and cultural presentations, performed by the San Pedro Dance Company. At midnight, the skies were lit with a fireworks display that officially commemorated the 25th birthday of the island. Islanders had a blast and celebrated the night away with the music of Super Furia. The municipality acknowledges and thanks all those people who in one way or the other have contributed to the success of our beloved island. Congratulation to San Pedro on its 25th birthday!
