On Sunday, the San Pedro AIDS Commission held a HIV Rapid Testing Day, where members of the community were invited to stop over at Central Park and “know your status.” According to President Felix Ayuso, this is an initiative started by the group in order to make HIV testing a habitual thing since it is important for everyone to know their status.
On Sunday, 59 people stepped up to the plate and had their blood drawn for testing. Once tested, individuals waited the short time it took for the results to be released. Nurse Bradley, Nurse Kelly and Caleb Orozco were on the island from Belize City and were on hand to offer counseling and testing assistance. According to Ayuso, this has been the biggest number of people who have gotten tested in one day to date. “We had even more than for World AIDS Day,” he stated. “Little by little we are achieving our goal of educating the populace.”
The Fundraising Subcommittee of the San Pedro AIDS Commission carried out an excellent job with their fundraising venture on Sunday. The committee thanks all those who donated food for the sale since that support proved invaluable.
The San Pedro AIDS Commission meets every first Wednesday of the month at different venues. Always looking for members the Commission invites interested people to attend. For further information, kindly contact Ayuso at 663-9922.
