Green Reef, a local based non-governmental organization, with the assistance of the San Pedro Tour Guides Association (SPTGA), Fisheries Department, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Belize Tourist Board (BTB) and local dive shops will be positioning mooring buoys inside and outside the reef during the next week.
According to Mito Paz of Green Reef, the buoys, rope, pins, shackles and hoses were bought by Green Reef. SPTGA bought some rope for the project; Ramon's Dive Shop and Bottom Time Dive Shop spliced (braided) the ropes and along with Amigos Del Mar will install the buoys. The BTB purchased the hydraulic drill which will be used to anchor the buoys into the bedrock. Hol Chan and Fisheries has volunteered to train dive shop personnel to operate the hydraulic drill.
Paz said that the buoys will be installed outside the reef from Cayo Cangrejo in the south to Mexico Rocks in the north. Buoys will also be set up at popular snorkeling sites inside the reef such as Mexico Rocks, Tres Cocos, Hol Chan Reserve and Tuffy Reef. Some areas already have buoys. These will be positioned in areas that do not have any. People who would like to assist Green Reef with this project can contact Mito Paz at 3739.
